Meter Change

The City of Milton is required to test meters every 10 years.  However, beginning January 1, 2014, the federal government is now requiring that all repairs and replacements be lead-free.  Therefore, the City of Milton is in the process of changing the water meters currently in homes to lead-free meters.  The Water Utility is contacting a certain number of property owners to schedule appointments on a regular basis.

Cross Connection Inspection

In addition to the meter change, the City of Milton is in the process of implementing a Cross Connection Control Program, which is required by the Safe Drinking Water Act.  The purpose of the program is to help eliminate possible contamination of both the public water distribution system and the private water system within your home.  The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) requires all public water utilities to implement this type of program and requires a survey of every facility connected to the public water supply.

More information about backflow and cross connection prevention is available on the City's website or by calling (608) 868-6901.

What Do I Need to Do?

If you've received a letter from City of Milton indicating it is time for the meter replacement and cross connection inspection, you need to make an appointment by calling (608) 868-6901 or online.

If you've not been contacted, you are not required to do anything at this time.

City of Milton water operators will be responsible for changing the residential water meters and conducting residential cross connection inspections.  There are no fees for the inspection.  However, any costs associated with the replacement, modification, installation, and/or testing of backflow prevention assemblies is the responsibility of the property owner/manager.
