Local Vehicle Registration Fee

At the November 29, 2016 Common Council meeting, Ordinance #2016-426 establishing a Local Vehicle Registration Fee, commonly referred to as a Wheel Tax, was approved.

The ordinance defines a "motor vehicle" as an automobile or motor truck registered under Wis. Stat. § 341.25(1)(c) at a gross weight of not more than 8,000 pounds.  The annual flat fee is set at $30 for all motor vehicles registered in the State of Wisconsin and customarily kept in the City of Milton.  The fee is paid by the registration applicant at the time a motor vehicle is first registered and at each time of registration renewal.

All Local Vehicle Registration Fees collected will be deposited into a special revenue fund to use for transportation related purposes.

The following plate types are exempt from the Local Vehicle Registration Fee:
  • Antique
  • Collector ("Collector Special" plates are not exempt)
  • Ex-Prisoner of War (if issued without registration fee)
  • Historic Military
  • Hobbyist
  • Medal of Honor
  • All special plates issued to a farm truck, dual purpose farm truck, or motor home.
Check your registration and registration renewal to ensure the correct location for your vehicle.  To correct the location where the vehicle is customarily kept, there are three options:
  • Follow the instructions provided with the registration notice
  • Email WisDOT
  • Call WisDOT at (608) 266-1466
Any person who gives a false or fictitious location where a vehicle is customarily kept may be fined not more than $200 or imprisoned not more than six months or both (section 341.60, WI statutes).
