Downtown Development
Downtown Districts
The City of Milton is unique in that it has two downtown districts only about one mile apart due to a merger of two villages, Milton and Milton Junction, in 1967. Both downtowns offer unique and different experiences to residents and visitors.
Goodrich Square
The Goodrich Square downtown district is located on the city’s east side just off of the State Highway 26 Bypass and part of TID #8. At one corner of the district is the city’s historic gem, The Milton House, built by Milton’s founder, Joseph Goodrich, in 1844. The Milton House is a National Historic Landmark and part of the National Network to Freedom due to the documented proof of the landmark’s role in the Underground Railroad. It features an underground tunnel that connects the Milton House to a nearby cabin used by runaway slaves.
A majority of Goodrich Square is also a locally designated historic district called the Village Square Historic District. The description of the district can be found in the City Ordinance’s Village Square Historic District section. There is also the Parkview Historic District along Parkview Drive in Goodrich Square, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Goodrich Square Master Plan was adopted in 2010 to help guide development in the district.
Junction Square
The second downtown district is known as Junction Square. This was originally the downtown for Milton Junction. The district is part of TID #7. On the south end of Junction Square is the Merchant Row Historic District that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Junction Square Master Plan was adopted in 2015 to help guide development in the district.
