Running for Office

Do you have an interest in serving your community? Individuals wanting to run for Mayor or Alderperson on the City of Milton Common Council or Municipal Judge for the Milton Municipal Court may begin collecting signatures for nomination on December 1 the year prior to the election. Candidate packets are to be picked up at Milton City Hall or they can be accessed by following the links below.
Papers must be returned to the City Clerk no later than 5 p.m. on the first Tuesday in January (or the next day if the first Tuesday is a holiday) before the Spring Election.  

The Alderperson and Mayor election is held at the Spring election scheduled in April and sworn in at the second Common Council meeting in April.  The Municipal Judge election is at the April election as well with the term beginning May 1.

Terms are two years for Council. There are six positions with three voted in per year. All positions are considered at-large and not restricted to wards or districts.

The term for Mayor is also for two years.  The Mayor race appears on the ballot during odd numbered election years.  

The term for Municipal Judge is four years.  The next election for Municipal Judge will be held in April 2023.

To run for either Mayor, Alderperson, or Municipal Judge you must be 18 years of age and be a resident of the City of Milton.
